The Sacrificial Anode: The Cheap Rod That Decides Whether Your Tank Lasts Ten Years or Five

A standard Australian storage hot water tank is a mild steel cylinder with a thin layer of glass fused to the inside, usually described as vitreous enamel. Hot water carrying dissolved oxygen and minerals is genuinely aggressive, and where it reaches bare steel the steel rusts from the inside. The enamel lining is the first defence, but enamel is glass, and glass fired onto a welded steel shell always has pinholes, hairline flaws and gaps at fittings and welds.

What keeps the tank alive is a piece of metal deliberately chosen to be more reactive than steel, screwed in through the top and hanging down inside the water. Corrosion attacks the easiest target, so the rod goes and the steel does not. That is the sacrificial anode. It is a consumable, it is cheap, and it does the most important job in the appliance.

The clock that starts when the rod runs out

The point most homeowners miss is what happens after the anode is gone. It does not fail gracefully. While the rod has material left, corrosion inside the tank is essentially paused. Once it is eaten back to the bare steel core wire, nothing in that water is more reactive than the tank, and the cylinder becomes the anode. From that moment it corrodes at every flaw in the enamel until a pinhole becomes a weep and the weep becomes a laundry floor full of water.

This is why two identical tanks installed on the same street in the same year can be years apart in lifespan. It is rarely brand and rarely luck. It is whether anyone ever checked the rod.

Magnesium, aluminium and zinc

Two materials dominate domestic tanks. Magnesium is the more reactive and generally provides stronger protection, which is why it is the common factory fitment. Being more reactive, it also consumes itself faster in aggressive water, so in some areas a magnesium rod doing its job properly simply needs replacing sooner.

Aluminium anodes, usually an aluminium alloy with a small zinc content, are the common alternative. They tend to last longer in hard or highly mineralised water and they are the usual answer when a magnesium rod is causing a smell problem, at the cost of somewhat less protective driving force. The choice comes down to local water chemistry, and a plumber who works the same suburbs every week knows which rod survives there.

The rotten egg smell

If the hot tap smells like rotten eggs and the cold tap does not, that is happening inside the tank, not in the mains. Harmless sulphate-reducing bacteria live in warm water, and the hydrogen released as a magnesium anode corrodes gives them what they need to produce hydrogen sulphide. Not dangerous, but it makes a shower unpleasant.

The usual remedy is two-part: sanitise the tank, commonly by raising the stored temperature for a period or chemically disinfecting it, and swap the magnesium rod for an aluminium or aluminium/zinc alloy one, which does not feed the process the same way. The wrong answer, and the one people reach for, is to pull the anode out and not replace it. That stops the smell. It also removes the only thing protecting the cylinder, and turns a smell problem into a replacement tank.

Checking it, and what you are looking at

There is no way to inspect an anode without draining the tank down and unscrewing the rod. The system is isolated, the water dropped below the anode fitting, and the rod backed out of what is often a seized hex fitting on top of the tank. On older installs that fitting can be corroded in hard enough to need real leverage, which is one reason this is a trade job.

As a rule, an anode is worth inspecting every few years, and sooner where the water is aggressive, very soft, or has a history of eating rods. A rod with a healthy diameter left goes back in and gets looked at next time. A rod consumed to the thin steel core wire, or broken into pieces, is overdue, and the tank has been running unprotected for some unknown period.

Headroom is the practical constraint. A straight anode needs roughly the tank's height in clear space above it to come out, and plenty of Australian tanks live in a cupboard, under a bench or in a roof cavity where that space does not exist. The answer is a segmented or flexible anode, built in linked sections so it feeds in and out at an angle. Confirm what will physically come out before booking the work. Powered anodes, and the honest limits

There is an alternative to a sacrificial rod. An impressed current or powered anode uses a titanium electrode and a small mains-powered controller to supply the protective current electrically, so the electrode is not consumed. It needs no periodic replacement, it can help with smell issues, and it suits tanks in awkward positions. The tradeoffs are upfront cost, the need for power, and another piece of electronics that can fail unnoticed.

There is also a limit worth being honest about. A new anode protects a tank from further corrosion. It does not undo corrosion already there. If a cylinder has spent years unprotected and the enamel flaws are rusting, a fresh rod slows what is left rather than reversing it. Anode replacement is preventive maintenance on a healthy tank, not a rescue for a failing one, and on a weeping tank the money belongs in a replacement system. If that is where you have landed, work through the system type comparison first.

One exception: stainless steel tanks generally do not use a sacrificial anode, because the tank material resists corrosion rather than relying on a lining. If you are unsure what you own, the compliance plate will say.

The practical takeaway

Anode replacement is the cheapest maintenance in a hot water system and the most commonly skipped. It costs a service call and a rod. Skipping it costs a whole tank, plus the install, plus whatever the leak damaged. Worth pairing with exercising the PTR valve, since the plumber is already there.
